It's a sad reflection on how morally bankrupt modern politicians are when they can build the case for continuing this war in support of the American Imperial ambition by saying "to quit now will be a betrayal of those who have died."
Have these people never read Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est? more…

This whole thing is becoming more ridiculous by the day. I was lucky to escape unscathed from a daft colonial war in 1958 in Cyprus. We lost 105 men but nobody in UK noticed and some of my contemporaries still bear the scars.
Time to come home lads. You've done well and I support you. more…

I was puzzled by Gordon Brown and David Miliband talking about next year's exit strategy. They seem to be laying themselves open to looking foolish, particularly once President Obama makes up his mind about his strategy - which presumably will be quite soon.
Increasingly, Afghans seem to be becoming a side issue in their own war with P more…

I had a year off once. At the time I wondered how I fitted work in when I was filling my off time with enjoying myself so much. I am definitely aoming to retire early.

Very True. America is still in recession though. They just counted Obama's stimulus handouts as economic activity. more…

Now that the UK is the only economy still in recession, perhaps GB was right when he claimed that he'd saved the world...it's a pity though that whilst he was busy elsewhere his own country has gone to the dogs. more…

I believe gordon, he is a honest man, as well as being excellent at maths. Its not his fault that with his one eye he misses the odd zero off a number which completely screws the entire financial forcast. more…

well you can follow the link and read it. And then make up your own mind whether the government are lying or not when they talk of recovery. Or you can ignore the link and believe Gordon Brown. more…

Yes but being a maket trader fo five years did a lot of shaping too - as did working on the factory floor for a year after I walked away.
It was the time on the markets equipped me to behave as badly as I have. Shameless - bloody amateurs :)) more…

No, the ones who got lost chose the other road and knackered themselves - I speak from experience. Should have kept of as a market trader after I married instead of letting my Dad piss me off and going back into regular employment. more…

Yeah, I like that one too. Only went for the Kipling quote for irony really, I'm sure he meant it differently from the way I'm using it to suggest how desperate our lives have become.
Oh, but not you and I of course Lois, you're a village potter and I'm an internet poet. ;) more…

Your related post is very evocative Ian - and even if you hate me for saying so, sensible too!
Another poem in the same vein (which I like better than Kipling) is by W. H. Davies:
Leisure
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare? ...

I was born without the ambition gene. I COULD have had a glamorous career - I was definitely heading there - but I went down the other route. My children. Other people. As my boss said at the time, when I told him I was pregnant: "you will never make it to boardroom level now".
And I didn't. But I am a director of my children's live more…
